The Story Behind TV3

In 2022, we introduced our idea of creating a Traveling Village to the world. What began with four “founding families” from different corners of the globe quickly became a reality. By early 2024, we were 19 families (70 people) traveling together across Asia for four unforgettable months.

Now, two of those founding families—one American and one Danish, both experienced in group travel and long-term family adventures—are continuing the experiment by creating TV2 and TV3.

With TV3, we are applying everything we learned from TV1 to make it even better. We’re building on the original village concept, focusing on creating the solution we’ve always dreamed of for ourselves. A key goal for TV3 is to preserve all the magical elements while making the experience a bit easier for parents.

Traveling Village welcomes all families, as well as individuals or couples without children, who are eager to explore alternative ways of living. Many of us are drawn to ideas like alternative education—such as home-schooling or unschooling—and see the world as our classroom. TV3 offers a space for those ready to experiment with new lifestyles, learn together, and build meaningful connections.

We’ve put significant effort into refining the Traveling Village experience and explaining it clearly on this page. Take your time to explore everything, and feel free to reach out with any questions. As founding families, our role isn’t to sell a dream but to share an honest and transparent perspective so that each family can decide for themselves if this is the right fit.

Why 20 families?
Because this is a village!

With 20 families—about 70 people—we've found the perfect balance. Here's why this works so well:

Enough diversity for variety and smaller groups: Whether you’re up for a weekly basketball game or a crafting session, you’ll always find others who are interested.

Space for individuality: Each family can take time for themselves whenever needed. The community is big enough to keep things running smoothly even when some take a break.

Kids of all ages: With plenty of children across different age groups, everyone has a playmate or peer.

Built-in connections: There’s a great chance everyone finds someone they really click with.

Manageable size: It’s not so big that it feels overwhelming—within a few days, you’ll know everyone’s name!

Flexibility for all lifestyles: A village allows every family to live in a way that suits them best, whether that’s active participation or a quieter approach.

A community of skills and fun: With so many interesting people, the possibilities for community-led activities are endless.

Low pressure, high engagement: With 20 families, the community thrives with opt-in participation and minimal requirements, making it easy to get involved without feeling obligated. There are always something happening, but also always someone opting out.

Lodging in Traveling Village

At Traveling Village, every family books the lodging that best suits their needs and budget. This flexibility ensures each family can find a space that feels just right for them.

From our experience with TV1, we’ve learned how crucial walkability and proximity to the community are for fostering connections. That’s why, for this trip, we’re putting extra effort into researching options with local partners to help families make informed decisions.

Each village includes a designated community zone—our heart of connection and activity. We encourage families to stay within or close to this area to maximize the experience, but the choice is entirely up to each family.

In TV1, we saw firsthand how collaboration within the community made a difference. Families worked together to find solutions, negotiate deals, and even set up coliving arrangements. This spirit of teamwork and mutual support will undoubtedly thrive in our third village as well.

“For the two entrepreneurs, the foundation they have laid down embodies a response to a profound societal longing for interconnectedness. Rødgaard-Jessen reflects: "It has been beautiful to be close to people this way – watching our kids grow, being together and sharing everyday life."

Introducing The Nest:
The heart of Traveling Village

The Nest is the heartbeat of the Traveling Village—a pop-up community space where activities are happening for the kids, there is space for free play and where the adults can get a breather and connect with the community.

The Village Scouts, two passionate and dedicated team members, are the anchors of The Nest. They lead the way in planning, coordinating with local venues, and kickstarting engaging activities for children, all while creating a safe and inspiring environment for everyone. From crafts and games to exploration and local immersion, the Scouts help kickstart activities, that are always fully opt-in. Beyond their responsibilities in The Nest, the Scouts are also available to assist families with childcare outside of regular hours, offering an extra layer of support.

The Nest also acts as a stabile element when we are changing location, being open 4 days a week. It’s a place where everyone can always find someone else from the community.

The Nest is built on collaboration and shared effort. A rotating workgroup of village members ensures that the space remains active, organized, and welcoming. It’s not a drop-off zone; it’s a communal hub where families contribute, connect, and create memories together.

As the heart of the Traveling Village, The Nest created togetherness. It’s a space where families can recharge, children can thrive, and everyone can feel at home on this shared journey.

We have written six ultra short articles, to give you a better idea about the purpose of the Nest. Each article takes 1-2 minutes to read.

What is Traveling Village really like?

Our goal is full transparency—we want to share the real experience and everything we’ve learned along the way. Traveling Village is, after all, an ongoing experiment!

During TV1, we created an 8-episode podcast where we openly discussed the highs and lows of the journey. On our Instagram, we dive even deeper into the details. Whether you’re curious about group dynamics, daily life, what it’s like for introverts, or any other aspect of the experience, chances are we’ve covered it in the podcast or shared our insights on Instagram.

Understanding the Costs
of Traveling Village

We want everyone to have a clear understanding of how the costs work, ensuring that everything is fair and open for all participants. Our approach keeps money from becoming a barrier to building a supportive community, while giving families the freedom to manage their own budgets.

If you are interested, here are the next steps

1

Fill out our application form

The application form takes 45-60 minutes and we ask that you do it with your partner (if applicable). The form is created to help families clarify if the trip is the right thing for them and also covers some of the more harder things.

2

Initial call

After filling out the form, your family will be invited to an initial call with a founding family. At the call we can clarify any questions or concerns and tell more about the trip. We call this the reverse sales meeting as we try to also ask some harder questions - again to help your family clarify if this is the right thing for you.

3

Second call

If your family is still interested after the initial call, you will be invited to the second call a few weeks later. Here both founding families will be present. Here we will cover new questions, tell about the status of other families and discuss the onboarding process.

4

The onboarding

At this point your family have to decide if you want to sign up. If you still want to sign up, you will be officially welcomed and the onboarding process starts. The onboarding process is an 8-step process where we collect info, share documents, get you set up in our systems and you get matched with another family signing up. When the onboarding process ends your family will be in Slack and meet the whole group.
