Traveling Village is an ambitious new experiment uniting 19 digital nomad families for a four-month co-living and co-travelling journey across the world.

Our dream explained

Before having kids we were traveling as very typical digital nomads. We wanted to have a lifestyle with a lot of traveling with kids, but we also quickly realized that it does take a village to raise kids.

After having kids we have grown increasingly interested in the way we structure life, where all families live in small silos without being part of a community living nearby. When we did our first 6-month trip with 2 kids, we realized that traveling and living abroad with kids is amazing, but it also required a lot from us. Especially the social element and stability are things that we missed.

This is an idea that started forming in 2017 when we were expecting our first child. In 2024 the first Traveling Village happened after one year of working on the logistics. We now hope we can use this concept and idea, to keep experimenting with lifestyle, challenging ourselves, and learning more about living differently with kids.

We have two kids, who are both home full-time (no school or daycare), and a big part of this project is to experiment with a different way of bringing up kids and to let them learn through exploring and to give them a lot of free play. With TV we hope to create an environment with a lot of space for self-directed learning, where learning about different cultures is built and where we both kids and adults get comfortable with being in a community.

On this website, you can find more information about the idea and all our learnings from the first Traveling Village. You are always welcome to contact us with any questions!

Best wishes,
Iris, Kai, Michelle and Nikolaj (3,6,35,38).

The big why

The big why

Why are we creating Traveling Village and why should you join? We believe that both we and you need to be sure about “why”. Joining TV is a big commitment, it’s a rewarding experience but also intensive and not just easy. The overall idea with TV is to experiment with lifestyle and we hope everyone returns home knowing more about themselves and how they want to structure their life.

“For the two entrepreneurs, the foundation they have laid down embodies a response to a profound societal longing for interconnectedness. Rødgaard-Jessen reflects: "It has been beautiful to be close to people this way – watching our kids grow, being together and sharing everyday life."

Village 1

Village 1 took place in the first four months of 2024 in Vietnam, Thailand and Japan. Read everything about our very first TV experiment right here.

Village 2

We are currently working on a village 2. We are taking all the learnings from village 1, but staying true to the original vision. Read about where we are now in the planning right here

Meaningful local partnerships

With around 70 people traveling for 4 months, TV can potentially have a big local impact (both positively and negatively). We want to be mindful about this, learn and improve so we have as positive an impact as possible. The first step is working with local partners who understands TV and get a lot of value from a partnership with us. Here are two of the partners we worked with in Village 1.

In Hội An we worked with local artist Minh who created the official Traveling Village artwork. Minh, his wife and his friends, became a part of TV, often joining communal meals and having kids over for art classes. TV was Minh’s biggest commission so far, and we were lucky to work with and support a local artist early in his career.

In Kyoto we had created a coliving setup for 7 of the TV families at the amazing Fujitaya hostel. We worked closely with Masa, the owner, almost a year in advance. We got to know Masa and his family, who also joined some of our communal meals. Masa helped us create some unique experiences in Kyoto and became almost like a part of our group.

Sharing what we learn

On Instagram we share open and honestly about the ups and downs of community travel. We use Instagram to build TV in public with the goal of others learning from our experiences, so they can create their own communities.
